Over the past two years, Google and Udacity have been able to roll out 1,000 and 10,000 scholarships for coders in 2015 and 2016, respectively. This year, German media company Bertelsmann too was involved in their scholarship program wherein more than 75,000 people were offered the opportunity to benefit from free developer courses. While the first phase of 60,000 scholarships had courses focusing on Android and Web development, the remaining 15,000 scholarships included courses in data science at both beginner and intermediate level. Google and Udacity have again launched a new initiative that will offer 50,000 scholarships to aspiring Web and Android application developers who will receive free technical training in either Web development or the Android developers program. The scholarship program is part of a broader “Grow with Google” initiative that Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced Thursday that will address digital literacy and job skills. Under the program, the company will offer free tools, training and events in a bid to help people become more computer literate and acquire valuable skills they need to prepare for and find a job requiring modern technology skills. This new scholarship initiative will provide every recipient a chance to learn new skills, launch or advance their career, and unlock their potential. The tools and courses are targeted mainly at job seekers, local business owners, teachers and developers. “Grow with Google is there to give anyone in America the tools and training they need to get a job, for free,” Pichai said in comments on Google’s The Keyword blog. According to Udacity, the scholarship program is structured in two phases: Phase 1: 50,000 Challenge Scholarships The first phase of this scholarship provides three months of access to one of four Udacity courses: Intro to HTML + CSS, Offline Web Applications, Android Basics, and Developing Android Apps. Scholarship recipients in these courses will receive a robust community experience supported by Udacity mentors and dedicated Community Managers; they will also have a chance to qualify for a full Nanodegree scholarship. Phase 2: 5,000 Nanodegree Scholarships The top 5,000 students from the first phase will earn an additional 6-month scholarship to one of four Nanodegree programs: Front-End Web Developer, Mobile Web Specialist, Android Basics, and Android Developer. The full-scholarships will include project reviews, mentorship, and community support. The students will receive free access to more advanced training material, as well as classroom time and access to experts in Web and mobile application development. These scholarship programs are available to the residents of the U.S. who are 18 years or older. To know more about the scholarship program and apply, you can click here.
